Bhai Manbir Singh

Trained in the Kasoor Patiala Gharana and in Rababi Keertan, Bhai Manbir Singh Ji has spent over two decades studying Gurbani Sangeet under some of the tradition’s most respected Ustaads. He now teaches in Sydney, tours worldwide, and personally guides every GSV student online.

Full training lineage
  1. First introduced to Gurbani Keertan by his grandfather, Bhai Prem Singh, who enrolled him at the Gandharv Mahavidyalaya in Delhi.
  2. After moving to Sydney, he learned Keertan with Giani Gurdev Singh before coming under the tutelage of Bhai Harjit Singh Delhi (nephew and student of Bhai Santa Singh Ji).
  3. His Classical vocal training began with Ustaad Mazhar and Jawad Ali Khan (grandsons of Ustaad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan), who initiated him as a Ganda-Band Shagird of the Kasoor Patiala Gharana. He also studied with Ustad Baldev S. Narang (disciple of Pt. Kesar Chand and Ustaad Salamat Ali Khan of Shaam Chaurasi Gharana).
  4. His Shastriya Sangeet training continued under Pt. Shantanu Bhattacharyya (disciple of Pt. Ajoy Chakraborty), with whom he studied the finer nuances of Raag Sangeet.
  5. He pursued further Taleem in Punjabi and Rababi Keertan compositions with Ustad Sheikh Badar Uz Zaman (disciple of Bhai Naseera Rababi, Bhai Faiz Rababi and Chhote Gulam Ali Khan of Kasur).

Waheguru ji ka khalsa Waheguru ji Ki fateh! For Savaliyo Beethlaiy in raag asavari, the tempo is 150 bpm. Is it okay if I sing it at 135–140 bpm?

M   ManbirS

Yes, that speed is totally fine.

N NavS

Question about “Sun Sajan Prem” shabad’s notation — what does this type of notation indicate?

M   ManbirS

These are source notes. First learn the composition, then begin attempting the sourcing.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve never learned Keertan before. Is GSV right for me?

Yes — and it’s who we built this for.

Most of our students arrive having never had a teacher, never read a notation, and never sat at a harmonium. You don’t need to read music, know any raags, or have any singing background.

You start where every traditional student starts: finding your own scale, then simple vocal exercises (paltas), then your first shabad. Every lesson tells you exactly what to do next, so you’re never staring at a library wondering where to begin.

If you’ve picked things up unevenly from YouTube, that’s fine too — the beginner series will fill the gaps you didn’t know you had.

Will I be charged during my free trial?

No. You pay $0 today.

We take your card details to set up your account, but nothing is charged for 7 days. On day 8, if you haven’t cancelled, your subscription begins.

Cancel any time before day 8 and you are never charged a cent. Cancelling takes two taps in your account settings. No phone call, no email.

How much time do I need each week?

15–20 minutes a day is enough to make real progress.

Music rewards short, frequent practice far more than long occasional sessions. Every lesson is broken into chapters, so you can do one chapter today and pick up exactly where you left off tomorrow.

How do I cancel?

Two taps: Account → Cancel subscription. It’s done immediately, and you keep access until the end of the period you’ve already paid for.

If you cancel during your free trial you’re never charged at all. Your progress, history and favourites will still be waiting if you return later.

My Punjabi isn’t strong. Will I be able to follow?

Completely. Every lesson is available fully in English — the instruction, explanations and notations.

You can switch between English and ਪੰਜਾਬੀ at any point, including mid-way through. Notations download in both scripts.

Do I get feedback, or am I learning completely alone?

You get feedback.

The student forum is where learners post recordings, ask about notations, and work through the parts they’re stuck on. Bhai Manbir Singh answers personally — not a moderator or support team.
